overview My research group has a long and successful history of using the intensive care units as laboratories in which clinical trials are conducted studying methods to improve outcomes for patients suffering respiratory system and other organ failures. We study long-term outcomes from critical illness such as the course of ICU-acquired weakness, a clinical process akin to frailty in geriatric populations but progressing precociously in the wake of many acute illnesses. The large clinical databases created for these studies can be correlated to blood samples collected over more than eight years in the same populations to identify host risk factors for or pathways leading to neuromuscular injury utilizing tools of genomic analysis.
